A hearty HURRAH! to Avatar's newest ArchAngel, Avendesora!
Aven has been on the cloud for several years now, and her
experience and enthusiasm for the game will be benefiting
all of us in her newest role as a Virtue! Please congratulate
Aven when you see her!
We also have a new Acolyte! Dalthane has recently joined the
Immortal ranks. All imms like to keep their histories a bit
secret, but rest assured, he has a long and distinguished
history with Avatar. Congratulations, Dalthane!
It seems that Crom and his coders schedules' have cleared up,
because they have been BUSY over the last couple weeks. Tons

I've tried to summarize them below. Take a look, and check

it practiced.
Dark Embrace Room message works if cast self.

Mendek recently posted a note asking players to disable
their auto-afk triggers. The short and simple of it is
this: we are running on a DSL line in Snikt's home, and
uplink speed is limited to less than normal. For every
player that is logged in, they receive every message
that they normally would, whether at their keyboard or
AFK. If 10 heroes are logged in to Avatar and using
AFK triggers, that is 10x every message they would
normally receive. (Think about it.. every chat, nchat,
herochat, hero infoset message, etc...)
Prior to this note, it was not uncommon for 25 or so
players to be AFK. That is some serious bandwidth being
used for players who aren't even at their keyboards to
receive the text.
Now, this doesn't mean you can't go AFK for a few minutes
to go to the restroom, grab a soda, even answer the phone.
What this does ask, is that you QUIT when you have to leave
for dinner, go to school, etc. The bandwidth you are using
while AFK could be spared to let the game run faster for
others. So, please, just logout. The imms don't want to
have to lean on those who abuse AFK triggers.
And, as a reminder, if you are able to, please help
support Avatar. Go to www.outland.org and donate!

This year at AVATAR, the Holiday Party will include a Secret
Santa-type give-away. This is basically where gifts are
donated, and then bestowed on your fellow AVATAR players.
We would like to be able to provide a gift for everyone
logged on at specific times during the Holiday Parties,
which are planned for the weekend of the 20th/21st.
To accomplish that, we will need lots and lots of gifts!
These gifts can take the form of tokens for renames,
harmonizes, etc.. nicely enchanted gear, weapons or a
piece of hard-to-find gear.
So far, AVATAR players have been kind enough to donate
several rename and harmonize tokens, grandfathered gear,
a full set of hero hit gear, a couple lowmort alts,
and even a few old ciquala staves!
Feel free to donate items to either myself or Raskar
at any time. The more gifts we get, the more times we
can hold a gift exchange! We want to cover as many time
zones as possible! Remember, we will need gifts for ALL
level of players!

I'm looking for aspiring ASCII artists for submissions to
the Gazette. ASCII art can help spice up the appearance of
the Gazette, and for original pieces, can earn you generous

Holiday Recipes
Anessa and Merck were both kind enough to share a few of
their holiday recipes with us. Take a look below, but be
careful not to drool on your keyboard. I think I'm going to
have a go at one of those Ham and Cheese balls!
Ham and Cheese ball by Anessa
1 small can deviled ham
1 sm package cream cheese
1 cup finely grated cheddar cheese
1 small can diced green chilies
Mix together, and chill until able to work into a ball form.
Roll in finely chopped walnuts, chill.
--------------------
From Merck:
=============================================================
Here are a couple of ideas...but I don't know what kind of
cheese you like. It sounds as if Anessa's cheese ball has a
bit of a bite to it already so we'll try some thing else.
I've included a couple ideas that may or may not work *cackle*.
Merck
Here is one with blue cheese (for those that really like
blue cheese)
1 cup sour cream
1/2 8 oz brick of cream cheese
1 cup blue cheese, crumbled
2 tablespoons roasted garlic minced
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1 teaspoon salt.
Blend all ingredients together until well blended. chill for
at least an hour (over night is good too).
Works well with veggies OR crackers like wheat thins
Here is one with cream cheese
1 cup cream cheese
1/2 cup sour cream
2 green onions finely chopped
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 teaspoon chopped rosemary (fresh)
1 teaspoon chopped thyme (fresh)
1 teaspoon chopped cilantro (fresh)
salt and pepper to taste
blend all ingredients together until smooth, refrigerate a
couple hours (or over night).
If you want to get fancy you can serve them in a "bread
bowl." Just get a small round rustic bread, cut off the top
and hollow out the center and put the cheese dip in that.
It looks cool, so people will think you worked harder.
In the cream cheese dip you can substitute goat cheese if
you'd like but it has to be soft.
Enjoy

Grandfathered Areas and Items
Yggdrasil by Lady Kyandra
In a recent issue of the gazette, Kenji was mourning areas
that have gone. I think we all remember those fondly.
I remember The World Tree, better known as Yggdrasil. It was
originally written by Glop and was loaded, if I remember
correctly, around level 10. It was replaced several years
ago by Grunka's Kombat Skool, written by Yevaud.
Why was this area one of my favorite mortal areas? I am
not sure. Maybe it was my own Norse ancestry that lead it
to intrigue me so. Maybe it was just its simple layout and
structure. Either way, every lowmort I had back then ran
there.
The mobs there were simple animals, some were hidden, and
many were the ones actually based in the myth of the world
tree. There were Hollyphants and planetars, dretch demons
and casme, babau and yagnodemons, kostchtchie and nabassue.
Most were demonic and evil, a few, like the solar and cloud
dragon were good aligned. Oh and we can't forget the wemics,
frost giants and the gorgimera.
There was little gear of real value there. Polearms and cold
iron hammers, bastard swords, and looking glasses. My favorite
piece of gear, that I should have grabbed before it went away,
was the cast iron girth. It was negative int. I could have
added to my collection of negative int gear. If I look at
the stock area, it says there were detect potions there,
sadly, it has been so long, I do not remember if there were.
There were also the hollyphant tusk wands and crystal sleeves
which were invisible and many didn't know they were there.
To enter the area, you started at a room, called literally,
the Entrance to Yggdrasil. If you went down, you found the
evil mobs, if you climbed upward, the good aligned. The ones
at the top were harder too.
*Smile* It was one of my favorite lowmort areas, and one I
will always miss.

Last Month's Trivia Quest
If you haven't noticed, life as a player looking for a quest
has seriously picked up! Thanks to our busy Quest Staff and
Immortal Kariya, we are now averaging several quests a day,
as opposed to a few months ago, when it might have been a
once-a-month deal. Thanks to all of the Quest Team for their
awesome work!
Last month, Doolen and Kerdor were the only two correct
submissions to the item trivia quest. Good job, guys. I
hope the reward was worth the effort! I had asked players
to list the items most commonly associated with each mob.
Here were the correct responses:
Grunka - Goblin Boots of Fleeing
Vernon - Moonblade Dagger
One-eye (Orphanage) - Scarlet Silk Sash
Mad Kzin - Head of Jubal, Insanity Token
Snow White - Heart of Gold
Foaming Lunatic - Scales of Justice
High Priest of Snikt - Claws of Snikt
Aramus - Midnight Boots, Dagger Shadowfang, vest of Shadow
Dragon hide
Savia - Shard of Durrite
Half-Orken Man (Dessicated Farmland) - burning lavalier,
rock

Monthly Gazette Quest
This month, the quest is rather simple. Those recipes above
got me thinking about my own holiday cheese ball, Kzinti
style! I have an old family recipe here for a Kzn Cheese
Ball. If you can get me these ingredients, I'll give you
an Angel Bless. This contest will run anytime I am on, for
the whole month of December. Low mortal characters only,
please! (No Heroes or Lords)
Bread (any kind)
a hunk of cheese
Rabbit meat (can be a carcass, chunk of meat, or flayed)
a carrot
Bring these four items to Kenji, and I'll give you an Angel
Bless!

Gazette Poll by Angel Kenji
I recently polled the question "What do you most like to do
while on Avatar?" on Debonair's Avatar Boards.
Almost 200 people visited the poll, but only 32 voted. Still,
32 votes gives us a good idea of what our players love most
about Avatar. Here were the poll results.
Gain Levels [2] ** (6.25%)
Running/Grouping [8] ******** (25%)
Soloing [1] * (3.13%)
Socializing [9] ********* (28.13%)
Enchanting gear sets [2] ** (6.25%)
Exploring new areas [0] (0%)
Role Playing [0] (0%)
Try new race/classes [0] (0%)
Quests/contests [4] **** (12.50%)
Misc [6] ****** (18.75%)
Just from the numbers, it looks like running/grouping and
socializing are the two most popular things to do on Avatar.
And that makes sense. Muds are an online version of
traditional tabletop role-playing games. The best parts of
playing D&D years ago for me were getting together with
friends, ordering a pizza, and smashing the heck out of some
orcs.
I was more intrigued by some of the responses out there, when
I probed our players to give a bit of detail. I'd like to
share some of those below.
ArchAngel Felinda said "A major part of being an Angel is the
social aspect, whether it's with other Angel and Imms, or
with newbie lowmorts, or even with heroes and lords. The
reason you'll see me mostly in my Angel rather than my
alts is because that's what I most enjoy doing."
I like what Akmetra said; "I like socializing, finding people
with er.. common interests, shall we say. It is nice to find
another lonely person online, and brighten up each other's
day. Thanks a lot... you know who you all are."
Lady Kyandra seconds that, saying "Avatar has produced a lot
of friendships, special ones. It's what an online community
is all about, no?" I couldn't agree more.
Anessa enjoys running quests, and loves watching the players
have fun, which is what she does with the Quest Team.
Lord Samchay enjoys running and leading lord groups. He
especially likes 'pushing the envelope' by 'trying the same
run with fewer people, etc.'
Lord Bendar has a different take on it. He enjoys creating
gear sets to help others out. One of Avatar's most visible
auctioneers, Bendar said, "I'm not really into having the
"best" set of gear around; I do it mostly to help others.
That's why I (or an alt) am on auction at least once a day,
and I think it is why A LOT of people poll me for help. I
love it, makes me feel like I am doing something to help
someone else escape." He also stated "Oh fyi I have tried
a few other muds, but nothing compares to AVATAR ...that is
why I stay."
All in all, there are many reasons why we each play Avatar.
Some of us enjoy running. Some are there only for the social
aspect. For most of us, it changes from day to day. Lord
Mindesto said "at one time or another, every single one of
those options were a reason I played Avatar." And to quote
Sleight, "I picked Misc. Sorta thought about choosing
socializing, but then I thought- a bit of these three:
grouping, socializing, and questing."
What is your reason for coming back to Avatar each day? Why
do you log on? I'd love to hear it. Send me a note on board
2 or drop me an email at gazinput@outland.org I'll continue
to post these in the Gazette in the future. Thanks to all
who participated, and keep looking to the Avatar Boards for
more Gazette Polls!

The Goblin Raids by Lord Odhinn
I woke up in a clearing beneath a great tree. An ancient
shaman was looking over me, as if guarding me against anything
that might harm me. Getting up from the ground, I checked to
see if I had all my equipment. I remember being hit over
the head in a bar in Solace, then waking up here. I found
that I had all my equipment, but no money. The shaman looked
at me and smiled, then pointed south. Off in the distance,
I could see the top of a large tower. I asked if he meant for
me to go there, and the shaman nodded. Reluctantly, I gathered
myself and set off toward the wicked-looking tower.
Arriving at the tower, I found that it was in shambles. The
normally smooth surface had been hacked and hewn, until every
entrance had been buried under rubble. There was a man sitting
beside the temple, obviously hoping to get in. The man looked
at me, and nodded his head. He then asked me if I could help
him. He didn't have a weapon, but wanted to get a pickaxe
from the goblins who had did the damage to the tower. He said
that if I went in and killed the goblins, and brought him a
pickaxe, he would give me 300 gold coins for the axe and 50 gold
for each goblin head. Since I had already realized that I had
no money, I agreed to his terms.
I returned to the shaman beneath the great tree, and asked
him if he knew where I could find the goblins. He pointed
east, toward a large mountain in the distance. Following his
directions, I found myself climbing along a narrow path up the
mountain, until I stood in front of a large cave.
I ventured into the cave, expecting to be ambushed by a horde
of goblins at virtually any moment. What I saw held me amazed
and in awe. Goblins were sleeping and staggering here and there;
almost none noticed my arrival, or seemed to care very much if
they did. I took this as a good sign, and proceeded to venture
deeper into the cave, searching for a pick axe, and a reason to
begin the slaughter. I got nearly all the way to the back of
the cave before it happened.
Seemingly out of nowhere, I was hit in the side of the head,
with what felt like a large wooden club. Picking myself up
from the ground, I saw a rather large orc materialize before my
eyes. He looked upon me in apparent anger. Raising his club
over his head, he began a downward strike, that would crush me
into the stone floor, and possibly further into hell itself.
In fear for my life, I quickly rolled to my left, and kicked
off the wall with both of my legs, effectively jettisoning
myself under the great orc's wide-spread legs. I knew that I
only had a few seconds before the huge oaf could turn around,
so I went swiftly into action. Jumping to my feet as fast
as I could, I drew my sword with a sharp metallic chirp. I
spun the blade around in my hands, until the point pointed
down, raised the sword, and plunged sharply downwards, just in
time to stab it through his mouth, and out the base of his spine.
A sickly gurgle escaped the goblin, then its body slumped
downwards, letting the sword slide cleanly out of the wound.
The crash of the body hitting the ground was unmistakable, even
more so was the sound of his gigantic club clashing and
clattering upon the stone floor. Adrenaline rushed through my
veins, as I realized that the sound may have alerted others.
Without sheathing my now bloody sword, I continued quickly into
the next room, unprepared for what awaited me next.
Standing before me were 4 goblins. One was obviously a king,
which was obvious from the crown on top of its head. Two
others were obviously guards, judging from the fact that they
held actual metal blades, and wore some rather shoddy leather
armor. The last goblin seemed to be the king's personal servant,
judging from the fact that it was pouring some dark liquid into
the king's cup.
The battle that began next was fierce. The two guards advanced
upon me, yelling for other guards to come. Their long daggers
met my sword in a heart-wrenching crash that could be heard
throughout the caves.
For the next hour, I fought against the hordes of goblins.
They seemed to be endless. As I killed one, three more would
take his place. They moved around me, to block my path to the
king. Eventually, their numbers seemed to dwindle noticeably
I finally hacked through the last remaining defenders, and
approached the king. After all I had been through in the last
few hours, there was no way I was going to let him live. The
pathetic king sat there, as I carefully took aim, and lopped off
its ugly head. Looking around me, I realize there was no way
I could carry all the heads of the slain back, so I opted to
just carry one, the head of the king. But just in case, I
chopped off the right ears of all the corpses, and strung them
on a rope I craftily twisted of goblin hair .
I wandered through the rest of the chambers of the caves,
until I finally found the pickaxe I had been looking for. Then
I left the caves, without ever seeing another goblin. My walk
back to the tower seemed to whiz by, as I calculated how much
money I was owed. It was not until after I had claimed my three
thousand gold in prize, and had prepared to travel back to
Solace, that I noticed the injuries I had sustained in the battle.
I managed to barely make it back to the shaman under the tree,
before the loss of blood forced me to pass out.

Website of the Month - Avatar Player Locator by Lord Bailey
http://avatarpl.cjb.net/
One of the things that has always fascinated me about Avatar
is the diversity of our playerbase. It has been a great joy
of mine to make friends with players from all over the world.
I feel honored to count among my friends, people from the UK,
Netherlands, Australia, Canada and Singapore, just to name
a few.
Lord Bailey has provided a very unique resource in his
Avatar Player Locator website. Here, you can register your
own listing, with your character name, real name (optional)
and your location. Bailey then provides a graphical listing
of all the players in Avatar.
Obviously, being based in the Eastern US, players from the
States are a bit predominant. However, it may surprise you
to see how many players are from Canada. Or Australia!
Take a look at Lord Bailey's website, and if you haven't
already, register yourself today!
