When the game began, the noble donkey stood before the Oracle before any
quest was yet dreamed of. The Oracle pronounced, "You are strong and
stubborn. You shall toil for others your entire life and bear heavy
burdens that would break a lesser being's ba ck. Your years shall be
numbered at 40, and you shall die."
The donkey responded, "Oracle, 40 years is too long to slave endlessly,
let my years number 20 instead."
The faithful dog addressed the Oracle, and the Oracle responded, "Your
interests are for the welfare of others. Loving, obedient, and rather
stupid; your span shall be 20 years. That which burns brightly, also
burns quickly."
The dog that 20 years was far too long to spend in service, and asked to
have its years reduced to 10.
The monkey stood forth next and the Oracle intoned, "You are the clown of
the world. Condemned to be laughed at no matter your intentions, you will
bring delight and merriment to every situation. Your time shall be 40
years."
The monkey complained that 40 years as a buffoon was unbearable and asked
that its time be shortened to 20 years.
Finally, the Human Warrior stood alone before the Oracle. "You are man
(or woman as the case may be), and therefore very ordinary. Your time
shall be spent in learning the things that come naturally to others. You
shall live 20 years."
The Warrior slowly spoke, "20 years is too little for all that I should
know. Pray, give me the years that these others reject!"
The ancient Oracle paused (a notable fact in that it has never happened
before or since) and said, "Very well. You shall spend your first years
in gathering skills and the wisdom of your fathers. Then you shall marry
and in burdensome toil provide for y our family. Next your will mature
into a loving and tireless servant for your wife and children. Finally,
you fate will be to make clownish faces and idiot noises for your
grandchildren's amusement. No silliness will be beyond reason for you to
attempt if the barest chance of eliciting a smile from your beloved
grandchildren weighs in the balance."

3. Proof that high hr/dr is a status symbol by Septe

I recently lost my two base 12 Sapphire Rings which has +4 damage
modifiers. These can no longer be found in the game as the area was
removed. At first I was very upset as I knew I couldn't replace them and I
don't like the ice rings as they are very fra gile when breathed on. Then
I remembered a comment given to me by an imm and a friend and got to
thinking, what do those numbers mean anyways. Well, I decided to do some
suppositions and very basically, figure out what the numbers mean. Now I
had to take liberties as there are hidden modifiers, AC modification which
I haven't a clue as to how it works, and of course, the random variable.
I'm taking a mob that has 2000 hp with no AC, a weapon with an average
damage of 40, and three separate DR as you might find on an average hero:
95, 105, 115. (I realize that 115 isn't average but bear with me *grin*) I
created a simple formula:
Mob new HP = Mob current hp - 3 times (avg dam + DR). Why three times?
This is an average number that a hero might hit in any given round.
DR 95 DR 105 DR 115
----- ------ ------
Round 1 1595 1565 1535
Round 2 1190 1130 1070
Round 3 785 695 605
Round 4 380 260 140
Round 5 -25 -175 -325
Ok...so what does this mean? Well it means, that it takes the same number
of rounds to kill the mob. So, it really doesn't matter if you have 1 or 2
dr more than the next person or even a whopping 20! Now, it's only on the
big mob is where the extra dr ma kes a difference but not much of a
difference and if you're in an extended fight, that's not a good situation
as you're getting hurt for those rounds.
Why am I telling you this? I'm telling you that this is my proof to you
and to myself that having a better hr/dr than you doesn't mean much in the
fight. It only means that it's a status symbol...see! I have higher hr/dr
than you...*shrug* Now that doesn' t mean anything to me any more...a
friend is telling me to use Ice Rings...I'll use them if given to me, but
I'm not going out of my way to get them...Now I'm using Templar
Rings...they have different stats that I'm happy with and can live with.
Now, I no longer worry about losing gear as I make sure I can replace it
easily. The only thing that I'll worry about are the quest gears given by
the imms.
Disclaimer: this is a very simple look at the way hr/dr works. In no way,
am I saying that this is exactly how it works. I don't have access to the
code and even if I did, I wouldn't tell you exactly how it works, only
what you can see working...

4. Avatar as seen in the eyes of a Mob Part 2 by Apocalypse
________________________________
Hello, my name is Apocalypse, I having recently read ciqualas message wish
to tell about my run ins with this Avatar Union. You see when I was
approached by the avatar staff to work as a full time mob, I was elated
and willing to serve as a rabbit in the meadow...or maybe even a solace
townguard. But then the avatar union got a hold of me and told me about
my rights. They pushed me to demand to be extremely powerful and to have
4 large powerful bodyguards. Well needless to say it happened. And now I
am so lonely. No one ever visits me here and those that try are soon
slaughtered by my bodyguards. A.U. as the Avatar union likes to call
themselves, never told me that the bodyguards would be aggie.
Well its too late to change things since I have a lifetime contract being
one of the largest most powerful mobs in the plane of midguuardia.
I also have my own guilty conscience to deal with. It seems that one day
some people made it through my blood thirsty bodyguards and were visiting
me, I was so happy but then those people went to sleep right in front of
me, can you imagine that...first guests I have over in years and they go
to sleep on me...well I kinda of slaughtered them and now people hate me
too...DARN you Avatar Union.......DARN YOU!
I must go now...but before I leave let me tell you this...The Avatar Union
is Evil, do not deal with them

[Ed: Considering the personna and defining qualities of this character,
the story remains unedited....save the falmes for when I decide to make a
pdf version of the Gaz. *cough* -- Diz]
The dwarven mines area and it's meighbours has always intrigued me maybe
cause i have only soloed there and that's always a bit more
fun, nailbaiting or whatever. This little story is about that area and i
think it has a point although i'm not quite sure what it is, actually i'm
quite sure it says something about the less pleasing facets of my
personality.... Anyway while soloing in the darven mines i stumbled upon
the duergar kingdom, the first encounter was brief and painful, but my
curiosity was awakened and some time and a couple of levels later i
returned for revenge. Hardly had I expected that this area would be an
ongoing pain in my..errh well. After some failures I stumbled upon
something,I really can not tell what, lets say i got intrigued by something
down there and i simply could not let it go! So i spent spellups, roamed
the area, well even tried to quaff items(!) and nothing helped. So some
levels went by,and all the time this was like a thorne in my side. One day
it was obvious...oh so easy! All this time spent on this, why did i not
group and level some instead?! So what have i learned?Nothing of
course!Presently i am looking for an area noone heard about. The other day
I thougth i had found it! I prepared myself for the big invasion, hard
earned sanctuary potions, crimsons and some bless stuff...and enter! I
think that you can guess it..of course it was an area 10 below my
level, and the only treasure was an item that my alignment disliked. The
search goes on!
